We've asked our online panel about what their views and attitudes were on healthy eating and junk food advertising. Here are some of the main findings:


MidBritain believe that the main causes of obesity in the UK are unhealthy eating and lack of exercise.

  • Only 4% of those surveyed cite the advertising of fast food/sweets and crisps as the main cause
  • Almost 3 times as many claim loss of cooking skills as the cause

84% of MidBritons believe that parents taking responsibility will have the biggest impact on improving healthy eating and reducing obesity

  • Only 5% believe government advertising legislations would have the biggest impact
  • This is versus the 8% who say government campaigns would

MidBritons believe that the greatest responsibility for tackling the nation’s diet comes from parents/guardians and the individual themselves

  • Only 1% say the advertising industry

Three quarters of MidBritons agree that there is no harm in occasionally treating children to food that is high in fat/sugar

The vast majority (71%) of MidBritons do not believe that the restriction of advertising will change the habits of the nation
